The Tahoe Reno Industrial Center is the largest industrial center in the country and consists of 106,000 acres of land with lot sizes from 5 to 5,000 acres. It is located in Storey county, 17 miles east of Sparks. The USA Parkway, which was a privately built, six-mile-long road will be extended by the Nevada Department of transportation by more than 12 miles to reach US 50 near Silver Springs. The 18-mile-long roadway will further link the Reno/Sparks and Fernley/Fallon areas with the US 50 Silver Springs corridor. When complete, the industrial center will be about a 15-20 commute from most of Northern Nevada’s communities. The roadway will be open to public traffic on September 8, 2017.
The Tahoe Reno Industrial Center has spurred massive growth in the Northern Nevada area with over 100 companies currently calling it home and many more slated to arrive in the near future. Some of the companies that currently call the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center home include: Chewy.com, Google, Jet.com, Mars Petcare US, Panasonic Energy Corporation, Petsmart, Switch Business Solutions, Tesla, Tire Rack, Wal-Mart Distribution Center and Zulily.
The first of four planned hotels is currently under construction and a portion of the property is being zoned for retail. Some of the hotels are building rooms equipped with kitchens to accommodate traveling workers. Lance Gilman, the industrial park’s developer is looking forward to a “downtown” area within the park.
Change is happening in all areas of business in the Northern Nevada area and it will take a regional approach to keep up with the growth. Reno’s trajectory has forever been changed and is quickly moving from a tourism based economy to an industrial economy. Manufacturing in Northern Nevada has seen double digit wage growth in the last couple of years and in spite of the growing pains, the future of the economy looks favorable.
